Victoria Rooms September update

Following the further easing of the Coronavirus restrictions, the Victoria Rooms is gradually returning to normal.

We also start this new chapter with some great news – the Victoria Rooms has been awarded Hallmark Levels 1 and 2 by the Community Council for Somerset in association with Action for Communities in Rural England – well done to the Chair and members of the Management Committee for all their hard work making this possible.

The first monthly market for sixteen months took place on Saturday 7 August and, apart from the masks and hand sanitiser it was as if it had never been away. There was a wonderful buzz of conversation, both in the main hall and in Victoria’s Café in the Reading Room. All the stallholders did a good trade and the new filter coffee went down a treat at the Café. A big thank you to Sally and Chris and their teams for getting the post-Covid Victoria Rooms’ monthly markets off to such a flying start! Molly Burton is the lucky winner of the August 100 Club draw – well done Molly!

The Victoria Rooms will be hosting a Heritage Exhibition on Saturday 23 October from 10am to 2pm. There is no entry fee and everyone is welcome to come along and discover fascinating facts about Milverton’s past. Amongst many interesting items, there will be displays on the Broadmead Family and other families with important connections with Milverton. There will also be loads of old maps, including the 1842 Tithe Map as well as information about some of the houses in the village. For more information, or if you have something you think may be of interest to be included in the display, please contact Maggie on 01823 400142  or email maggiedinning@gmail.com. Victoria’s Café will be open during the exhibition, providing delicious light refreshments.

After a break of what will be nearly two years, we are pleased to announce that Gwil Wren’s Victoria Rooms’ Quiz Night makes a welcome return on Friday 12 November, starting at 7.30pm. As a Covid precaution, it has been decided to limit numbers, so there will be 10 tables available, each accommodating teams of up to 6 people. The cost will be £5 per person, to include a Ploughman’s supper. There will also be a bar and a raffle. If you would like to reserve a table for your team, please contact Sue on 01823 400609  or email sueknowles14@btinernet.com.

Looking forward to 2022, we are planning a Craft Fair on Saturday 19 March 2022 from 10am to 2pm and would like to invite local crafters to book a stall. Tables will cost just £10 each and can be booked by contacting Sue on 01823 400609  or email sueknowles14@btinternet.com. Victoria’s Café will also be open.

If anyone would like to help at Victoria’s Café, either at the monthly market or at any of our fundraising events, or if you would like to make a cake or other light refreshments for the Café, please contact Chris on 01823 400872  or email field524@btinternet.com.

Our new Facebook page is up and running, so we will be able to attract lots of interest in our forthcoming events.

The hiring of our gazebos has been very popular this year and, with a bit of luck the weather will mean they will still be in great demand over the next month or so. If you are having an event and would like to hire one, please contact Philip on 01823 400609  or email philipjknowles@btinternet.com.

The committee is very pleased to welcome back our loyal hirers and if anyone would like to book the Victoria Rooms for a new club, society or for a birthday party, please contact Geoff on 01823 401365 or email geoff.elson@xini.com.
