From the Irish Sea to the North Sea by bicycle
Early in September, five members of the ‘Milverton Recyclers’ cycling group completed the 185 mile journey from Ravenglass in Cumbria to Sunderland following the line of the northern frontier of Roman Britain. The riders, Tim Bidlake-Corser, Lindsay Fortune, Chris Pine, Fiona Taylor and William Waddington cycled for 18.75 hours over four days which left plenty of time off the bikes for sight-seeing and coffee stops.
Known as Hadrian’s Cycleway, the well-marked route provided magnificent views of the coast and remains of the Roman wall and forts. It followed country lanes and quiet roads interspersed with sections of dedicated cycle path. The coastal sections were relatively flat but the central section included some steep hill climbs.
Well done William for organising the trip.
