Organic herbs, spices and botanicals – grown, sourced and supplied in Milverton.
Nestled down a track on the edge of Milverton, many would be forgiven for not knowing there was a thriving business, celebrating its fortieth anniversary in 2022. Since 1982, Organic Herb Trading has firmly established itself as one of the leading businesses in organic herbs, spices and botanicals.
Founded in 1982 by Mike Brook as Hambleden Herbs, Mike began growing herbs in a field near his home in the Thames Valley. Quickly realising that he wouldn’t be able to meet demand, he began searching for products abroad, and built up a large portfolio of suppliers around the world.
Hambleden Herbs launched its own ranges of pre-packed herbal teas and culinary spices, the first organic products of their kind to ever be available in the UK. To support the growing demands for space, Mike and his family relocated to Milverton in 1994, renaming its bulk trading division to The Organic Herb Trading Company in 2000, and later selling the Hambleden Herbs retail brand.
The business has paved the way for organic herbs, spices and botanicals in the UK, and now source and supply over 500 products, from more than 60 countries around the world from suppliers with whom they have built longstanding relationships. Mike led the way for introducing new products, including bringing organic Cocoa powder to the UK for the first time in 1999. The company’s customers range from individual herbal practitioners to the most respected global organic brands including Yeo Valley, Pukka Herbs, Neal’s Yard Remedies and Riverford Organics. Its commitment to fair and ethical sourcing policies and high-quality ingredients, means that product integrity and authenticity remain at the core of the business.
Now with manufacturing, export, NPD and consultancy services embedded in the company, Organic Herb Trading holds its position as one of the most highly regarded businesses in the industry. They provide blending and milling services to some of the world’s leading tea suppliers, including Pukka, and sell a wide range of medicinal and culinary herbs – ranging from 250g bags to pallet orders of several tonnes.
Organic Herb Trading is a significant local employer with more than 50 members of staff at their HQ, which is also home to a beautiful two-acre biodynamic herb field, where more than 60 herbs are grown. The herb field is a small but intrinsic part of the business, and supplies both fresh and dried herbs to a range of customers including distillers and beauty manufacturers. They are using a number of their own fresh botanicals to create a new range of more than 90 organic herbal tinctures which have launched as part of their 40th anniversary.
