Fire in Silver Street
Extract from newspaper 1871.
Seven cottages were lost to a fire in Silver Street , as all were thatched even with the efforts of the fire engine they could not be saved.
Only Mr Palmer a retired farmer was insured.
Using the 1871 census and the occupiers names given, I think I can be sure that these cottages were situated next to the site of the Old Turnpike cottage which is the corner plot between Silver Street and North Street. This is still not built upon today.
The 1840 tithe map shows cottages on that site but not on the later OS map of 1890. The names of those affected were Chaffey, Palmer, Quick, Waygood, Chorley and Harris. Occupations were laundress, farm labourers and shoe mender.
A meeting of the Milverton Local History Group on 29 September will be held in the Victoria Rooms at 2pm.
All welcome to attend.
