Milverton Recreation Ground Matters in February

Welcome to the first, and hopefully, a regular newsletter from the Milverton Recreation Ground Trustees. We plan to keep the village aware of news and events happening at the ‘Rec’ during the coming year.

Firstly, we saw several longstanding Trustees retire at the AGM. We wish to record our thanks to Barbara Tucker, Ray Arthur and Nick Mogford for their efforts over the years and welcome Becky Hards and Phil Young to the team, joining Chris Saunders – Chair, Tim Bidlake-Corser – Treasurer, Mike Sheppard and Malcolm Rotheram.

Last year many improvements were made. The Terrace was made safe and is now a perfect place to watch the cricket; double glazed units replaced the old wooden windows; a fire safety panel was installed and safety lighting upgraded; the kitchen was refurbished and the bar and lounge of the Pavilion Clubhouse was fitted with new curtains and soft furnishings. It was all finished off with a lick of paint!

Unfortunately, John and Millie Coward handed in their notice and stopped running the Clubhouse bar in September which has had a negative impact on our income. We are pleased that Becky and Tamsin have agreed to become the hosts of the Pavilion, initially offering a reduced level of opening times, which hopefully will become more frequent as the year progresses. Opening times and details of events and food evenings will be published on the Alive in Milverton Facebook page, the Pavilion at Milverton CC Facebook page, village website and the parish magazine. The venue is also available for hire.

In commemoration

It was 100 years ago on 23 December 1922 when the land now used as the Recreation Ground was transferred to the village. In commemoration, Trustees old and new, met at the Pavilion bar to celebrate this landmark.

Toilet block funding

And finally, we have secured the necessary funding, with the invaluable help of Jilly Rumble, to start the refurbishment of the external toilet block. Once completed, this facility will be available for visitors to the grounds and children’s play area. Work is due to start this month with a completion date sometime in April.
