Busy Bees food bank activity

In February the Busy Bees met at the Victoria Rooms to learn about the need for food banks, and to help organise the food that has been collected recently in the Milverton Food Bank. They learnt that non food items are also needed such as toothpaste, and easy cook food that only requires a kettle or a microwave is wanted as some recipients do not have a cooker. On the Taunton Food Bank website there is a list of what is particularly needed and what items they have enough of. The Milverton Food Bank is in the Church and some of the Busy Bees have made posters to advertise this.

We ended the session with some pancake tossing and races as Shrove Tuesday was two days away. As you can see from the photos not all the pancake tossing was as accurate as it might have been!

Burns Night supper

On Wednesday 25 January over 50 members of the local community celebrated a hugely successful Burns Night Supper hosted by Torquil Buist in the Victoria Rooms.

The evening  began with Scottish reels followed by a bagpiper Alastair Caygill piping in the entrance of the haggis. David Hatfield eloquently read the famous Burns poem ‘Ode to a haggis’. A delicious supper of haggis, tatties and neeps and Cranachan was served and enjoyed by all the guests.

Hedgerow Chaplain in March

March is the month where Spring really starts to come into its own glory! The longer days and warmer temperatures bring out the happiness factor in us all knowing we don’t need the overcoat, the gloves or the flask with the hot drink when we go for a walk.

It is that time of season to do some sitting, maybe under a tree, by a stream or at night looking up at the stars, all to appreciate having come through the wonderful winter land and entering into the next amazing season of regrowth, flourishing nature and all those good things around us that is Spring.

Enhance your spirit and wellbeing, by being part of what you actually are part of, but not realising it as much or as deeply as maybe you could. Enjoy everything around you with great joy and delight.

Spring astronomically begins on the 20 March with the clocks changing on the 26 March at 2am.

Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday is on the 19 March. Another day to celebrate someone special.

St Davids Day is on 1 March with St Patrick’s day on the 17 March.

7 March at 12.40 pm is the date for the full moon called the Worm Moon with the New Moon appearing on 21 March at 5.23am called the New Pink Moon.

The March Spiritual Walk will be around Milverton starting from the church at 10am. It is a walk of 3.5 miles and taking around 2.5 to 3 hours.

Please contact me at to confirm that you will be joining the walk.

Friday Club March update

March is with at last and we are sure everyone, like us, is looking forward to some warmer weather and everything we love about Spring.

Over the past few months, we have welcomed new members and volunteers to the group each bringing new ideas and ensuring the future of The Friday Club. Thank you.

Sadly, we have said farewell to several long-term members and friends of our group. We thank them and their families for all the support given to us over the years in so many different ways.

Our programme for this month is:

  • 3 March. A talk by Elizabeth McDowell about her very interesting career in the field surrounding the regulations involved in broadcasting and the BBC
  • 10 March. A morning of music and song Join us for Andre Rieu and his wonderful orchestra. (Not live 😊)
  • 17 March. Home safety fire protection. This presentation is by a representative of the Fire Service and offers everyone the opportunity to understand what can be a fire risk in the home. A free home inspection is offered if wanted, including the testing of smoke detectors. The detectors can be replaced free of charge if needed. The Fire Service also support you if you have a hearing or visual impairment. We have had this presentation before but the information is useful to refresh our memories. It is well worth having this return visit (rescheduled from Feb)
  • 24 March. My antipodean experience (to be confirmed)

If you are considering coming along for the first time as a member or to join our activities programme, please give me a call. We are inviting people to come along and just join in our events, activities and presentations without staying for the member’s lunch. You will be most welcome for a small fee.

If you require transport, we work closely with Wivey Link so you may consider speaking to them as an option of travel.

Activities programme subject to change.

We are always looking for new members and volunteers to join our incredible group.

Hope to see you soon at The Pavilion, Recreation Ground Butts Way, Milverton. Held every Friday 10.30am to 2pm

Milverton Concert Society March update

Lara MeldaLara Melda – Piano
Friday 31 March 2023 at 7.30pm
St Michael’s Church, Milverton

Following on from the exquisite performance by saxophonist Jess Gillam in February, Milverton Concert Society will be welcoming pianist Lara Melda on 31 March at St Michael’s Church in Milverton. As our regular concert goers will know, all of our performers are at the top of their profession and have that extra special something which make the concerts memorable.

Lara is no exception. She won the BBC Young Musician competition in 2010 at the age of 16, performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2 in the final round with Vasily Petrenko and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Cardiff. She made her Wigmore Hall debut in 2017 and followed this with three more sold out recitals there in 2018, 2019 and 2021

She has won exceptional praise for her Chopin interpretations and at Milverton she will be performing Chopin’s sublime Nocturne in Bb minor and Sonata No3, as well as works by Beethoven, Liszt, Poulenc and Brahms. Have a look at Milverton Concert Society and click on to the clip of her performing at the Wigmore Hall….and please book early. Our concerts are often sold out.

Parish Council February summary

  • The planning application for works at 27 Courtfield was approved under delegated powers
  • Conditional support was given to the proposed tree works at Milverton School
  • A good level of response was reported for the survey on the bus service, with the results allowing discussions to take place with the bus operator in due course
  • Grants were awarded to a number of charities that support local residents. These were: Citizens Advice, The Samaritans, Wivey Area Partnership and the Wivey Food Project
  • An application received from the Recreation Ground for a grant to replace damaged equipment in the children’s play area was considered and it was resolved to provide £650, which covers the costs of the replacement
  • Mrs Jill Larcombe was confirmed as the Internal Auditor for 2022/23
  • It was agreed that an email be circulated round village groups to assess how the parish is proposing to mark the Coronation in May
  • At the risk of becoming repetitive, delays in completing the revamp of the toilets were again reported, the damp weather not helping the newly plastered surfaces to be successfully painted. (At the time of writing, these issues are seemingly now resolved and the final handover and the awarding of a cleaning contract should, with fingers crossed, allow for the reopening to be effected from 1 March)

Full minutes will be posted on the Parish Council website.

The next meeting will be held on Monday 6 March at the Victoria Rooms.

If you have any queries on any Parish Council matter, please let me know.
