Future of the Friday Club

It is very much hoped that the weekly lunch club will be resurrected, although it may not be entirely in the same form, or on a Friday!

Past members, and those interested in becoming part of the group, met in the Methodist Chapel for a lovely afternoon tea last month to chat and meet some of the volunteers who have kindly offered to help make this initiative possible.

If you would be interested in joining the team, or would like more information as to what would be involved, please get in touch. You would certainly not be expected to volunteer weekly! If you would like to join or know someone who might benefit from being a member, again, please let me know.

Sue Knowles on 01823 400609 or at sueknowles14@btinternet.com is organising a rota for ‘entertainment’ and would be grateful to hear from anyone who has any good quality board games such as Scrabble, Bingo or playing cards they could give us; nothing that takes too long, so we have back up if we do not have a speaker. I have spoken to some people in Milverton who have offered to give a short talk with photos to the Club. If you think you could offer to speak or some other kind of entertainment maybe sing or play an instrument or demonstrate a craft, do let either me or Sue know.

Carol and Alan retire from the Friday Club

Friday Club Christmas lunch 2023As you will all, no doubt, already know, the Friday Club has now, sadly, closed due to Carol Davidson, the organiser, reluctantly stepping down, and there being nobody able to take on the overall running of the Club.

Carol, ably assisted by her husband, Alan, and their team of volunteers and cooks, has run the Club for many years, first at the Victoria Rooms and then, for the past couple of years at the Recreation Ground.

The last meeting at the Rec took place on Friday 24 November and then, on Friday 1 December, the club went out on a high with the Christmas Lunch at Oake Manor Golf Club. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the excellent food and the friendly chatter and all agreed they would miss their regular Friday get-togethers, but remained positive that something new would develop in the New Year.

In the meantime, all Friday Club members and volunteers would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Carol and Alan for all their hard, selfless work for the Club and wish them much love and better health for the future.

Thank you for everything Carol and Alan!

From The Friday Club Members and Volunteers

Friday Club July update

Is it really possible we have reached July already? The next thing we will know is we will be preparing for the festive season; I am sure time seems to travel faster as I get older.

In June we had some very interesting, eclectic talks and presentations, ranging from palaeontology to Witches of Somerset. Not to mention the exercises, quiz and discussions.

Our programme for July will of course be the last until September whilst hopefully everyone enjoys our annual summer recess.

Our entertainment programme for July is:

  • 7 July – Bingo with prizes
  • 14 July – Bring a photo. Bring along a photo of when you were younger and see if the group members will recognise you, maybe a prize
  • 21 July – History of toys and games
  • 28 July – Group discussion

We meet again on the 8th September after the summer break.

As always, we are inviting people to come along and sample our events, activities and presentations without staying for the member’s lunch. There is a modest fee and you will be most welcome.

We are always actively looking for new members and volunteers to join our incredible group, so if you feel like either becoming fully involved with the events, meal and friendship, or utilising your time enabling our group to run smoothly, please give us a try.

Remember, by December recess we will need to have a new group organiser in place to ensure the Friday Club’s continuation. We are certain the perfect candidate is waiting for this prestigious opportunity to step forward.

Hope to see you soon at:
The Pavilion, Recreation Ground Butts Way, Milverton.
Held every Friday 10.30am to 2p

Friday Club June update

Welcome to our monthly Friday Club update, as usual much more happens each week than we can tell you about here. However, something which we are never short of is lots of chatter, laughter, company, a varied programme of entertainment and a delicious lunch.

Why not pop along and join us for just a coffee or ultimately join as a member?

Our entertainment programme for June is:

  • 2 June – Mindfulness art
  • 9 June – ‘West County Witches’ a presentation with Brian Wright
  • 16 June – Be part of the audience ‘Andre Rieu concert’ (2 hours)
  • 23 June – Age UK Seated exercise with Gill
  • 30 June – Summer Quiz

Our morning begins at 10.30am with refreshments followed by our entertainment at 11am ish.

Our street party to celebrate the King’s Coronation last month was enjoyed by all. Each of our members designed and made their own sparkling crown to wear at the party. Tables were suitably decorated and had plenty of food to enjoy. There just one little error, I forgot to buy the sherry, so we ended up toasting King Charles III with good healthy Somerset water! Is this a first?

As always, we are inviting people to come along and just join in our events, activities and presentations without staying for the member’s lunch. You will be most welcome for a small fee.

We are always looking for new members and volunteers to join our incredible group.

Hope to see you soon at The Pavilion, Recreation Ground Butts Way, Milverton. Held every Friday 10.30am to 2pm.

Friday Club April update

The first of April
Now if to be an April-fool
Is to delight in the song of the Thrush,
To long for the Swallow in air’s blue hollow,
And the nightingale’s riotous music gush,
And to paint a vision of cities Elysian
Out away in the sunset flush –
Then L grasp my flagon and swear thereby,
We are April fools my love and I.

Mortimer Collins

Friday Club January update

Wash day implements
Wash day implements

Carol, our Group Leader always has ideas for the entertainment of the group and this week was no exception. A representative from Somerset Heritage came to draw out of his audience their experience of washdays past. Some sad, some hilarious! He brought with him some pretty historic pieces of washing kit and proceeded to demonstrate, using a poss tub, a wash board and copious quantities of water!

Following our Christmas lunch on the 16 December we close for the holiday period our next meeting will be 6 January 2023.

We are always looking for new members and volunteers to join our team. Helpers set up from 9.30am, serve coffee and lunch, and interact with the group. Times and dates can be arranged to fit in with your busy lives and we hope you may be able to spare us a couple of hours whenever convenient to you.
