We are delighted to announce that the Recreation Ground has just received a coveted Certificate of Excellence from the Somerset Playing Fields Association.

Recreation Ground matters for July and August

Within the last month, the Recreation Ground has fallen victim to vandalism and two accounts of arson.

A sofa and a picnic bench have been set alight at the skate ramp which required the assistance of the Fire Brigade, also, a number of chairs and tables have been vandalised or removed from the Pavilion terrace. The culprits are known to the Trustees and their images have been captured on CCTV. The Police are also aware and we are asking all members of the public to be vigilant when at, or near the Recreation Ground as this cannot be tolerated. As we experience ever drier periods, the risk of fire spreading quickly and causing even greater damage is a real threat.

Rounders fun afternoon

Join us for an afternoon of fun rounders on Sunday 9 July from 2pm. Form your own team of 9 or just turn up and teams will be created – over 16s only. Fully licensed bar open for drinks and snacks.

Recreation Ground matters in June

This year sees the 100th Anniversary of the grand opening of the Milverton Recreation Ground on Whit-Tuesday afternoon 1923. The Taunton and Western Courier Newspaper covered the event, reporting that ‘through the efforts of Colonel Blunt and a large Committee of the townspeople of Milverton, they are now the proud possessors of a large and valuable public recreation ground.

Colonel Blunt presided over the event as the MP for the division, Mr Hope-Simpson, was delayed in London. Having opened the event, Colonel Blunt went on to explain that the cost of the ground was £400, of which £345 had been raised by public subscriptions’. A framed list of subscribers can be found hanging on the wall in the Pavilion Bar. The Trustees intend to produce a full copy of the newspaper article to be displayed next to the list of subscribers. Thanks to Maggie Dinning for finding the article.

Work on the Toilet block renovation continues, with the roof, internal and external decorations now complete.

Cricket fixtures

This Cricket Season there are two teams playing their home matches at the Recreational Ground. Ian Pincombe Captains the Milverton side who are playing non-league matches on selected Wednesdays and Sundays.

Oliver Buckingham Captains the Huish team who play in the West Somerset Cricket League and host their home matches on Saturdays. Huish took the decision to make Milverton Recreational Ground their home last season. All players are local and are playing a huge part in the maintenance of our delightful grounds. If anyone, male or female over 14 years is interested in joining either of teams, please email thepavilionmcc@gmail.com or message on

Recreation Ground matters in May

The refurbishment works on the outside toilet block has continued apace with the full structural roof overhaul complete with internal decoration and internal works due to be completed over the next few months, hopefully in time for the new cricket season.

The cricket square preparation has started with the application of loam followed by lots of pitch rolling and grass cutting. We are expecting a full schedule of cricket over the summer, with the Ground hosting both Huish and Milverton teams again. There is nothing better than watching the game from the Pavilion veranda, sipping drinks under a summer sun – well we hope the weather will oblige this year and give us some wonderful cricketing moments. A full fixtures list will be published shortly.

The Trustees are also refurbishing the old pavilion scoreboard with funding support from the Jubilee Committee. We are please to be working with the Jubilee Committee on this significant village project using funds specifically raised for community projects like this.

The old mechanical score boxes have been removed for overhaul, with external decoration starting soon. Our intention is to have the original scoreboard in operation for the start of the season to provide a lasting commemoration to her late Majesty.

Becky and Tams look forward to offering visitors a warm welcome to the Pavilion bar on the following dates in April but unfortunately the Friday food evenings have been put on hold for a few weeks. April Bar opening hours are:

Recreation Ground April Matters

Work has started on the renovation of the outside toilet block with the first stage started – the clearance of the surrounding ground. The outside render is scheduled to be cleaned and painted prior to the roof repairs taking place in April. We have had some delays to the works due to the recent inclement weather, but we now plan to crack on with the project.

A big vote of thanks goes to Jilly Rumble who successfully secured charitable funding from The Nolan Family Trust and Somerset Community Foundation for a significant contribution to the required funds. In addition the Trustees obtained additional funding from the Parish Council and the Milverton Trust to meet our funding target.

For all Pavilion bookings and enquiries for Recreation ground use please contact Becky either by phone 07595 483090 or email thepavilionmcc@gmail.com

Walnut tree planting at the Recreation Ground

To commemorate the centenary of the opening of the Recreation Ground a walnut tree grown by Maggie Dinning from a seedling donated by Milns Priscott was planted alongside the walnut tree planted in 2012 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of the late Queen.

The Recreation Ground was officially opened on Whit Tuesday 1923 by Mr John Hope-Simpson the Liberal MP for Milverton and Colonel Blunt head of the Royal British Legion Milverton branch.

Milverton Recreation Ground Matters in March

The Trustees held their first fundraising event on Friday 27 January at the Pavilion clubhouse. Thanks go to Gwil and Margaret Wren for once again providing us with a challenging quiz which was enjoyed by 80 contestants.

We also thank the volunteers who helped stage the event, Stephen Jones from Somerdale, who kindly provided the cheese for the ploughman’s supper and Becky and staff who manned the bar. Ticket sales and the raffle proceeds came to £1078 so a big thank you to all those who took part and have helped to contribute to the Trust’s funds.

Congratulations to Jim Greenhow and his team for their skill with the anagrams resulting in a winning score!

The Trustees plan further fundraising events during the year to raise much needed funds which will allow us to manage and maintain this valuable village resource. Milverton Parish Council has generously granted the Trustees funds to cover the cost of repairing the crows nest climbing frame which has been out of action for a couple of months. We hope to have it back in use soon.
