Dear Mrs Whittle,

Receipt of donation from Carols in the Cowshed Milverton.

We are writing to thank you for your kind donation of £1503.37. We really appreciate your continued support; it makes such a big difference in enabling us to help people who are homeless in Taunton. As you probably already know we have recently launched a fundraising campaign as our roof needs replacing over the next few months, and your contribution has helped us get one step closer to our goal. Warm wishes for you and the entire Carols in the Cowshed congregation for their valuable contribution during the festive season.

Yours sincerely,

Wreath making workshop

Following last years’ successful event, Lucy MacLeod again showed how Christmas wreaths are made on Saturday 2  December in the Methodist Church in Milverton. There was a good turnout and all who took part began with identical empty wreaths and a good variety of greenery.

They were encouraged to give their imaginations free rein and the completed wreaths very much reflected this. Liz Vernon and Marian Lauder kept all supplied with tea, coffee and mince pies and carols were played in the background  as the wreath making progressed. There was also a raffle with lovely prizes and all were able to take a superb wreath home afterwards.

The lovely friendly atmosphere was much enjoyed by everyone and the money raised was for Wivey Kitchens including the freezer full of food in Milverton Church. Lucy and Christine Whittle thank everyone who joined in.

Busy Bees at Christmas 2023

It was lovely to see so many Busy Bees at the Christingle Service in the church in early December, and then a few days later at the Candlelit Bazaar. Led by Mia Muscat, the Muscat and Hill girls organised the most impressive and successful stall for the Busy Bees. Not only did the ‘Guess where Santa will Land’ game run smoothly, it was visually fantastic and fun to do. The ambitious target of £65 for the Red Cross was reached which was incredible. Mia researched the Red Cross and made a beautifully presented and informative ‘display card’ about the work of the Red Cross.

Thank you to all who helped on the stall, ‘bought’ a country, and of course to the parents who are always invaluable.

Busy Bees November advent fun

Advent, which means ‘coming’, was the topic of the Busy Bee session in November. We thought about what would be coming in December – celebrating the birth of Jesus, and what preparations we make at school, in church and at home. We made some angel decorations for the church and voted on what sort of stall to run at the Candlelit Bazaar, and what charity to raise money for.

From the Vicarage in December

Getting ready for Christmas? As the shops get busier and deliveries increase so does the excitement and the stress of getting everything “just right” for a memorable Christmas.

The “Christmas adverts” on TV this year are very interesting, several are pushing the point that we can break with tradition and do things our own way. No two homes will be celebrating in exactly the same way, some may choose to ignore all the traditions and others cannot wait to get the decorations up and presents wrapped; some would like to do that but cannot afford to, others will rely on the charity of others to receive food, warmth and friendship if only for a few hours.

In our church life we are preparing too…flowers, trees and decorations, carol services everywhere, in Halse we will make lanterns for Halse by candlelight on 10 December at 2pm, in Milverton Sanctuary Crafting will be making angels on 13 December 6-9pm and the Busy Bees will also have made angels. Our way of preparing for the celebration of the birth of Jesus along with our special services culminating in Carols in the Cowshed on Christmas Eve at 4pm at Houndsmoor Farm, with the cash collection for Open Door in Taunton to support those who are homeless, and a traditional Midnight Mass at 11.30pm at Fitzhead.

Making memories is a huge part of Christmas, special times together, moments of joy, photographs, handed down recipes, decorations made by our children, songs to be sung, films to be rewatched, moments to treasure. This can also mean that for many of us there is a sadness too, changed times, lost or sick loved ones, we may want to just be left alone with our memories as all around us party and celebrate.

Our churches will all be open on Christmas day for those who need time to themselves, to remember, to reflect, to pray. Maybe to focus on the crib, the figures in the stable, no tree, no roast dinner, just people gathered around a baby in a manger, a sign of hope, a gift for us all, the gift of Love from God.

However you choose to spend Christmas this year I pray that you might know that Love and peace.

Candlelit Bazaar

The ever popular Candlelit Bazaar will return to St. Michael’s Church at 5.30pm on Wednesday 6 December.

Father Christmas will be there, along with a host of Christmas stalls, mince pies and mulled wine and a tombola! Entry is free.

Christmas Advent windows 2023

Throughout the month of December a new window will light up at dusk every day until Christmas Eve.

The final window will light up at Houndsmoor Farm after carols in the cowshed.

This year a little mouse can be found hiding in every window. This map will help you find them.

Many thanks to all who are participating to help make Christmas 2023 special for us all. The windows will be lit up until New Year’s Eve.

Happy mouse hunting!

We upload a photo of each window and display it for all to enjoy. Take a look at advent windows 2023.
