Tai Chi QiGong classes at the Victoria Rooms

Ageing Well classes are enjoyed by hundred of older people each week and they are beneficial in many ways. Tai Chi QiGong classes help improve balance, flexibility and strength using gentle movements and can be done seated or standing.

Tai Chi QiGong classes are available in the Victoria Rooms from 26 October on Wednesdays at 10.30am weekly. The cost is £5 per class, cash only. Booking is recommended, but drop-ins are accepted subject to numbers.

Gill will guide the class through 18 easy-to-learn mindful movements. QiGong, pronounced ‘chee gung’, is a form of Tai Chi that is beneficial to both physical and mental wellbeing.

Clothing 

Please wear comfortable clothing and flat, closed toe shoes.

Remember to bring

Please bring:

  • the correct cash as we are often short on chnage
  • a drink
  • any medication you may need during the session, for example, an inhaler, GTN spray, Epipen

Covid safety

Cleaning, hand hygiene and ventilation

We will be continuing to have increased hand hygiene such as frequent washing of hands and freely available hand sanitiser), cleaning (notably wiping touch points), and ventilation (before the class, and possible during the class) at all of our venues.

Vaccination and testing policy

We will continue to encourage our participants to have the vaccination and any boosters they are offered, if able to do so.

Social distancing, PPE and face coverings

In line with the government’s advice, we recommend the use of face coverings in enclosed spaces and where people feel more comfortable wearing one, but you are not obliged to do so.

We will continue to monitor class numbers, maintaining a reasonable distance from others during your class.

Booking

Step 1

Complete and return a new application form and post to:
Age UK Somerset, Ash House, Cook Way, Bindon Road, Taunton TA2 6BJ or fill in an application form online. 

Step 2 – after we receive your application

We will email or telephone you to confirm when you can start attending the class.

After this, we recommend you telephone our dedicated booking line or email us each week to reserve your place because there is a restriction on numbers. If you have not booked there is a risk you will not be admitted if the class is full.

You can book up to 6 days before, and as late as 2pm the day before your class (not including weekends) but we can only book you in for one week at a time.

Bookings will be on a first come first served basis. If you have not spoken to us directly, we will contact you by phone, or email to confirm your place.

Pilates classes

Abigail Wyles Pilates and Health Coach warmly invites you to her Pilates classes starting this September at the Victoria Rooms, Milverton starting 6 September:

  • Beginners 10am to 10.50am
  • Intermediates 11am to 11.50am

Cost is £8.50 per class or £45 for a six week block.

Active Ageing indoor exercise classes

Active Ageing indoor exercise classes are coming back to the Victoria Rooms as we move into Step 3 of the roadmap out of lock down.

These classes will help older men and women to remain active and healthy, and it is social fun too.

Millions of older people, as well as younger people with long term health conditions, are experiencing the consequences of inactivity and loss of social contact over many months during the COVID pandemic, a
situation which is unfortunately ongoing, although thankfully easing.

The impact of lock down has meant less opportunities to be physically active and exercise, resulting in a noticeable decrease in fitness and strength levels. The good news is that fitness can be regained when
returning to ‘normal’ – weekly classes, home exercises and getting out and about on a regular basis.

The classes in Milverton run on Monday mornings  from 10am to 11am.

The exercise programme works on improving balance, flexibility, strength and heart and lung health in a safe yet fun social environment.

If anyone is worried about having lost fitness during the pandemic and are apprehensive about starting to exercise again, then please do phone the instructor, Stephanie Anne. All government and fitness industry
guidelines will be followed to ensure the activity is COVID safe and to ensure everyone feels safe and confident attending these classes.

There are so many physical activity benefits for adults. Make a start today, it’s never too late!
