The Milverton Trust January update

We hope everyone has had a restful Christmas. 2023 was a great year for the Milverton Trust, we were able to provide the following grants to the village from the profits from our fund raising activities:

  • Street Fair hat prizes: £25
  • The Recreation Ground loo roof: £1,500
  • Church pew ends display boards: £255
  • Church pew ends printing: £156
  • Croquet Cups: £230
  • Garden Club: £200
  • Garden Club prizes: £35
  • Methodist Church roof: £1000
  • Notice boards – pin boards: £227.42

We hope to be able to provide more grants to the village in 2024.

We run our first collaborative fundraising Quiz with the Pavilion on the 28 November, it was a good laugh and raised £250 for the Trust’s coffers. The Pavilion bar was well stocked for the event and did not disappoint. 60 people attended with teams from around the village and Wiveliscombe. The Pavilion looked fantastic and everyone joined by wearing festive attire and decorating tables with a Christmas theme.

Special thanks to Tamsin, Becky and Nathan for helping make the event run smoothly.

On a different note, we would like to thank Geoff Elson for all his hard work as a trustee over the last 5 years. We hope you enjoy your new adventures.

The Milverton Trust December update

This month The Milverton Trust would like to introduce our new branding that has been designed and drawn by Torquil Buist. It really captures the essence of the village, we hope the village enjoys it. You will see this on our publications and posters in the future.

We hope everyone in village enjoys the festive month and time with families or friends over the Christmas bank holiday period. We look forward to organising lots of fund raising activities in 2024 so we can give more grants out to the village. Merry Christmas and have Happy New Year.

Finally to crown off all the Royal excitement that we have experienced these recent years, members of the still extant — just —Jubilee Committee, Julian Dakowski and Gary Whittaker, were happy to present to the Chair of the Victoria Reading Rooms, Phil Knowles, three commemorative plaques to mark one of the sites of celebration for the late Queen’s 70th Platinum Jubilee, a plaque to mark her life and long reign and another for the Coronation of her son King Charles.

The plaque of the late Queen’s reign and that of the King’s Coronation will be mounted inside on the south wall of the Victoria Rooms’ main Hall, central to the room. The ‘On This Site’ Jubilee plaque will be found on the exterior of the building facing Fore Street. We then can say that the building built to celebrate a Jubilee of Queen Victoria now marks the lives of a further two of her descendants, a span of five generations and six crowned monarchs.

Other plaques await installation but two will be found at the Village Recreation Ground, one on the Cricket Score Board Pavilion and the other on the Club House itself.

Milverton Trust November update

We have been really busy the last month talking to the Milverton school association, the Pavilion and making plans for the Street Fair and Barn dance.

The Milverton Trust September update

As we say a fond farewell to Julian Dakowski as our Chair we warmly welcome Phil Young as our new Chair. The The Milverton Trust (TMT) committee will be meeting on the second Monday of each month in the Reading Room in the Victoria Rooms. We will have printed grant application forms available if you are unable to print one from the TMT page.

The team are already making plans for the annual Milverton Street Fair which is scheduled for 6 May 2024 and we are organising a barn dance in conjunction with the Whittle family to be held at Houndsmoor Farm on the 18 May (keep the date free).

We have had several grant applications over the summer holidays, which is really super and hopefully can support many worthy causes with the funds made from our activities. The TMT have funded the purchase of a ‘croquet cup’ for the summer croquet competition, prizes for the window box competition run by the gardening club and village shrubs.

The TMT are going to be working to establish some of our local footpaths so everyone can enjoy them, watch this space !

The Milverton Trust June update

Milverton Street Fair and the Coronation barn dance

The Maypole 2023
The Maypole 2023

This is the land of heritage: May Day and Maypole in the heart of our countryside village, what better combination. Blessed by the sunshine we were and it gave us a very entertaining and successful Milverton Street Fair event. So many came and so many left happy, having enjoyed the stalls, the food, the music and entertainment, the Maypole and, above all, their own community. And the further stretch of street closure better wrapped in the Pub, to add a new zone of entertainment and activity. A good day had by all.

We are delighted in the response for Street Fair Volunteers and have all of the following to thank: Mike and Cathy Sheppard, Dave Pritchard, Bryony Dunk, Nick and Jane Argles, Gary Whittaker, Patrick Storer, Claire Fisher, Anita Dakowski, Heike Bernhardt, Carole Young, Garry and Karen Baker, Lucy Mcloed, Geoff and Sue Hill, Frances Medvedev, Shaun Mears, David Hatfield, Katherine Botes. Special mention to Torquil Buist, bunting hoist extraordinaire and Claire Townsend who we have crowned Milverton’s Recycling Queen; diligence beyond call. Thanks also to our photographer Nick Thomas and Vicar, Helene Stainer for Hat Judging and along with Ruth Beaumont and Sarah Smith — Maids of the Maypole?— we intend to set up a team to teach the art of Maypole dancing in sessions to all comers; more news in the year. Apart from all entertainers who made the day so enjoyable we extend a special thank you to Maypole and Squeeze Box aficionado Brian Heaton and to the generosity of Dan Davies and Sally Churchyard of The Old House, all without whom this revival of tradition would not have begun.

Finally, we can not overlook the wonderful barn dance at Houndsmoor Farm that followed on the Coronation weekend. It astounded all expectations: wonderful music, amazing turnout, amazing dancing, all thanks to the generosity of Arthur and Christine Whittle for loan of their land and farm barn and there is talk of this becoming an annual event. Roll on next year for more fun.

The Milverton Trust is to hold this year’s AGM on Monday 19 June at The Victoria Reading Rooms all welcome to attend.

Signing off for the last time, Julian Dakowski TMT Retiring Chair. Enjoy your lovely village. You lucky people!

The Milverton Trust Street Fair update

This year our annual Street Fair actually falls on the very first day of the month of May and traditionally for that we have our very own Maypole erected again to crown the festivity and fertility of the season.

This year we have extended the Fair to at last include our pub and can enjoy it and its forecourt area for activities and live music. The new closure will mean that on Fair day from early morning until 4.30pm, all Creedwell traffic will have to follow the access and exit route using Rosebank Road, Houndsmoor Lane and Turnpike. Apologies for the temporary inconvenience. There will be stewards at all critical points.

We are delighted in the response to our request for volunteers on Fair day, but we are still looking for more. Just an hour or two during the day to steward the street would be invaluable. Please email The Milverton Trust at or call 07711 048001.

Finally, just a little taster, for the Coronation weekend, Arthur and Christine Whittle have very kindly given up one of their barns for the village to hold another fun barn dance. Great live band with great Ceilidh music, food stall courtesy of the Sawmill and a licensed bar. Wristband tickets are £8 each and can be purchased by email at or call 07771 888240. Under 12’s go free.

Milverton street fair 2023

The Milverton Trust’s major fundraising event during the year is the ever popular annual May Bank Holiday Street Fair. This is an enormous organisational and logistical activity which this year we hope to expand and we desperately need helpers on the day itself.

If you were able to give up an hour or so to help us in some capacity then we would be very grateful to hear from you. After all, a successful Street Fair means that we are able to channel more funds back into the community!

Please email the if you would like to be part of this wonderful event and can give us some of your time.
