Subsequent to the February meeting, First Bus announced cuts to the #25 bus service from April 2024, though the proposed new schedules have not yet been confirmed. DIscussions were also due to take place with Somerset Council before any final decision is taken.

No.25 Bus – Use it or Lose it!

As we have previously publicised, our bus service through the village of Milverton is under threat – Somerset Council has stepped in to protect the service until March 2024 – thereafter there will be a review with passenger numbers being critical to the outcome. We have less than six months to make a difference!

We need more of us to take a bus!

Even if it is just once a week, and instead of a usual car journey, please consider supporting the 25 Service. One way fares are now further capped for ‘less than a latte’ at £2 per journey until the end of 2024.

Your Parish Council is liaising with Somerset Council on the situation but ultimately the decision on the 25’s future will be made by First Bus and will be directly linked to passenger numbers.

Communities need buses – but buses need passengers. Please make that effort to take a bus instead of the car. All single fares within Somerset capped at £2 until December 2024. Find out more at First Bus.

Bus it from Milverton and throughout Somerset

The £2 fare per journey now extended until 31 October 2023 and then a further year’s extension capped at £2.50 per journey.

Somerset Council in conjunction with The Somerset Bus Partnership have extended the £2 per journey capped bus fare across Somerset. This will now run a further three months up until 31 October 2023. Further good news is the ‘Bus it’ scheme will then be extended from November 2023 for another year with each fare then capped at £2.50 per journey. This initiative includes the No. 25 service running through Milverton. This service runs from Dulverton via Wiveliscombe and Milverton and on to Taunton (and back) and currently saves passengers around 50% for a return journey into Taunton (or around two thirds saving one way). It’s a great initiative that has already encouraged a significant increase in the use of bus services since its introduction – it enables travelling to be more affordable in these challenging times as well as the climate positive of taking cars off the road.

Speedwatch volunteers needed

Milverton Community Speedwatch monitors and records the speed of vehicles going through our village. We work together in a group of two or three for sessions of up to one hour. We are a visible presence with the aim of keeping everyone safer in our village. If you have an hour or two to spare per month we would welcome you as we are urgently looking for new volunteers. Full training and support will be given.

‘Bus it’ capped bus fares extended

Bus It’ – from Milverton and throughout Somerset – £2 fare per journey now extended until 30 June 2023.

Somerset County Council in conjunction with the Somerset Bus Partnership have extended the £2 per journey capped bus fare across Somerset. This will now run a further three months up until 30 June 2023. The good news is the ‘Bus it’ scheme includes the No. 25 service running through Milverton. This service runs from Dulverton via Wiveliscombe and Milverton and on to Taunton (and back). This will save passengers around 50% for a return journey into Taunton (or around two thirds saving one way). It’s a great initiative to make travelling more affordable in these challenging times as well as the climate positive of taking cars off the road. As mentioned, the ‘Bus it’ scheme covers most routes throughout Somerset so, for example, one could travel from Taunton to Minehead or Taunton to Glastonbury for just £2 each way.

The success of the ‘Bus It’ initiative will no doubt be measured by its uptake and will also help initiatives to seek improvements to the service to further increase usage.

Parish Council

‘Bus it’ from Milverton

Greatly reduced fares until 31 March 2023

From 1 January through to 31 March 2023 Somerset County Council, in conjunction with The Somerset Bus Partnership, are introducing a capped bus fare across much of Somerset of £2 per journey.

The success of the ‘Bus it’ initiative will no doubt be measured by its uptake – your Parish Council would support an extension to the scheme as well as discussions around a better bus service through the village. A successful uptake of the ‘Bus it’ scheme would certainly help this argument and debate.

More information on the scheme can be found at Bus it, you know it makes sense.
