Victoria Rooms December update

This is the last village magazine before Christmas – where has 2023 gone?  There are still a number of events taking place in the Victoria Rooms during December and, as usual, members of the committee will decorate the hall in true festive fashion.

Our monthly market on 2 December will have a festive theme. There will be a raffle with some great prizes and mince pies and mulled wine will be on sale at Victoria’s Café. The draw for the 100 Club will also be made. The winner for November was Jan Gorton – well done Jan. All the stalls are taken at this market but if you are interested in having a stall at a future market, please contact Sally on 01823 400320 or email at barnyackland@hotmail.co.uk to check on availability. Stalls are great value at just £2.50 each.

As previously advised, our pre-Christmas event – ‘Mince Pies and Merriment – is on Friday, 8 December. This will be a brilliant evening of music, readings, poems and sketches, all with a Christmas theme, ending with everyone joining in to sing some of our favourite carols. Tickets are £7 each, which includes mince pies and a glass of mulled wine. There will also be a bar.  Doors open at 7pm and tickets are available by contacting Rebecca on 07946 627987 or email at milvertonamdram@gmail.com. Last year this event sold out very quickly, so advance booking is advised.  We look forward to seeing you there.

We are delighted to announce that the Victoria Rooms now proudly displays three plaques kindly donated by the Milverton Trust to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, her sad passing and the Coronation of King Charles III. There will now be a permanent record on our village hall that Milverton commemorated these three notable royal events within the space of 12 months. Our grateful thanks to The Milverton Trust for purchasing the plaques and entrusting them to the Victoria Rooms.

The Victoria Rooms’ AGM is being held on Tuesday, 9 January from 7pm and everyone is invited to come along and hear what has been achieved in the last year together with plans for the future of the Rooms. You are also invited to join us for a glass of wine and some nibbles and chat to our current Trustees. As mentioned last month, the Management Committee is in urgent need of new Trustees coming forward to ensure the continued smooth running of our village hall and, hopefully, after having the chance to find out what is required, you may be inspired to give it a go.

Details of our joint fundraising event with St Michael’s Church to be held on Saturday 6 April 2024, when Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir will be singing will be available next month, so just put the date in your diary for what is going to be a most enjoyable evening.

Please don’t forget to save your postage stamps from your Christmas cards and all other mail as these can be sold to help raise funds for the village hall. They can be left in the pouch in the Reading Room when the hall is open or at the Post Office.  Alternatively, please contact Maggie on 01823 400142 or email at maggiedinning@gmail.com.

Check out what is happening in our village hall on our Victoria Rooms Facebook page.

To hire the Victoria Rooms please contact Geoff at geoff.elson@xini.com or on 07920 188612.

The Management Committee wish all our hirers and supporters a great Christmas and a very happy 2024.

Victoria Rooms November update

First of all, the Management Committee would like to repeat its request for people to come forward who would be willing to act as Trustees. With one or two exceptions, all our current Trustees are ‘of a certain age’ and many of them have served on the committee for in excess of ten years. It is, therefore, time for some new blood to step in to continue the smooth running of our village hall for many years to come.

We don’t want to get to the situation where, for various reasons, our remaining Trustees need to step down which could then leave the hall at real risk of closing.   So please, if you feel you could spare some time each month to assist with the running of our village hall, then contact our current Chair, Philip Knowles on 01823 400609 or email philipjknowles@btinternet.com. Alternatively, if you don’t feel able to commit to becoming a Trustee straight away, perhaps you could consider becoming a Friend of the Victoria Rooms, helping out at the monthly market and fundraising events by setting out or clearing away chairs or helping with an occasional tidy up – the more Friends we have on board the less there is for each person to do.

Chris has a great team helping to run the café at the monthly market but still wishes to hand over the reins for the overall management of the café. Again, if you feel this is something you could do, please contact Chris Field on 01823 400872  or email field524@btinternet.com who will be delighted to give you more information.

The winner of the 100 Club for October, which was drawn at the monthly market, is Rachel Rossiter – well done Rachel.

The next monthly market will be on Saturday 4 November, between 10am and 12 noon, when Victoria’s Café will also be open in the Reading Room. There may still be stall availability at this market and if you are interested in having a stall at this or a future market, please contact Sally on 01823 400320 or email barnyackland@hotmail.co.uk to check on availability.

Victoria Rooms summer update

As mentioned last month, we have still had no response to our plea for people to come forward to fill the Trustee  vacancies on the Management Committee, and if you feel you could spare some time each month to assist with the running of our village hall, we would love to hear from you. If you don’t want to commit to becoming a Trustee, perhaps you would like to volunteer to become a Friend of the Victoria Rooms, which entails helping out at the monthly market and fundraising events by setting out or clearing away chairs or helping with an occasional tidy up– the more Friends we have on board the less there is for each person to do. If you feel you could help in any way, please contact Philip on 01823 400609 or email philipjknowles@btinternet.com.

We are also looking for someone to take over the running of the café at the monthly market. Chris Field, who has been doing a great job for many years, now wishes to step down and concentrate on her young grandchildren and her other interests. She has built up a great group of people who help on a rota-basis, so there is plenty of support. If you feel this is for you, then please get in touch with Chris on 01823 400872 or email field524@btinternet.com who will be delighted to give you more information.

There is still time to sign up for the 2023/2024 100 Club, either to renew your membership or enter for the first time. If you would like to take part, please contact Sue on 01823 400609 or email sueknowles14@btinternet.com and she will send you an application form. Entry costs just £12 a year for 12 monthly draws which means there are 12 chances of winning the monthly prize of £50 and, with only 100 members, the odds for winning are much better than the National Lottery! The first draw for the 2023/2024 100 Club takes place at the August market, so please get your application forms to Sue by 22 July to be included. The winner of the June draw was Chris Sumter – well done Chris!

The July monthly market will be on Saturday, 1 July between 10am and 12 noon, when Victoria’s Café will also be open in the Reading Room. If you are interested in having a stall at a future market, please contact Sally on 01823 400320 or email barnyackland@hotmail.co.uk to check on availability.

Should you be planning an outdoor get-together this summer and feel the need for some shade, the Victoria Rooms’ gazebos are available for hire at a very reasonable cost. If you are interested, please contact Philip on 01823 400609 to check availability.

To hire the Victoria Rooms please contact Geoff on 01823 401365 or geoff.elson@xini.com

Victoria Rooms June update

The Milverton Street Fair on Monday, 1 May saw the village packed with people, all enjoying the atmosphere and we were so lucky that the weather was kind and the sun shone.

The Victoria Rooms was buzzing with activity – the main hall was full of stalls selling a variety of goods and all the traders appeared to be doing a brisk trade. The Reading Room was home to Victoria’s Café where the choice of delicious homemade cakes was amazing and The Old Vic was on the forecourt selling beer, cider, wine and soft drinks and doing a roaring trade – in fact they ran out of both cider and keg beer before 4pm! It was great to see people sitting on the forecourt of the hall relaxing and listening to the excellent live music which had been arranged by Milverton Music. The Management Committee would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who helped and supported the Victoria Rooms at the Street Fair and also to the Milverton Trust for all their hard work in making the Fair happen.

Unfortunately, we have had no response to our plea for people to come forward to fill the Trustee vacancies on the Management Committee. If you feel you could help with the running of our village hall we would love to hear from you. If you don’t feel you have time to become a Trustee, perhaps you could volunteer to become a Friend of the Victoria Rooms, which entails helping out at the monthly market and fundraising events by setting out or clearing away chairs or helping with an occasional tidy up– the more Friends we have on board the less there is for each person to do. If you feel you could help in any way, please contact Philip on 01823 400609 email at philipjknowles@btinternet.com.

Renewals for the 2023/2024 Victoria Rooms’ 100 Club are continuing to be received. However, if you are new to the village, or feel you would like to take part, please contact Sue on 01823 400609 or email at sueknowles14@btinternet.com and she will send you an application form. Entry costs just £12 a year for 12 monthly draws which means there are 12 chances of winning the monthly prize of £50 and, with only 100 members, the odds for winning are much better than the National Lottery! Although there was no monthly market in May the 100 Club draw still took place and the lucky winner this time was Diana Tymoshenko – well done Diana.

Our next monthly market will be on Saturday 3 June, when there will be a variety of stalls in the main hall and Victoria’s Café in the Reading Room selling delicious cakes and coffee. The market and café are open from 10am to 12 noon. If you are interested in having a stall at a future market, please contact Sally on 01823 400320 or email at barnyackland@hotmail.co.uk to check on availability.

The Victoria Rooms’ gazebos are available for hire at a very reasonable cost if you are hosting an outside event and think you may require some shade from the sun! If you are interested, please contact Philip on 01823 400609 to check availability.

Volunteer for Victoria’s Cafe

If you have an interest in baking and meeting local people, could give up a couple of hours on the first Saturday morning of each month and organise the other helpers, read on!

Our current volunteer wants to step down to spend more time with her grandchildren after running the Café for 8 years.

Support and handover will be given and there are several people who regularly come along to assist. The Café is run primarily for the benefit of the community so they have a warm, safe place to socialise.

All proceeds go towards the running of the Victoria Rooms.

Please apply to Christine Field call on 01823 400872 or email field524@btinternet.com for further details.

Victoria Rooms May update

Somerset Opera’s performance of The Gondoliers went down really well with an enthusiastic audience. Despite ticket sales starting off slowly, the Victoria Rooms was full and the audience enjoyed a colourful and energetic performance. £250 was also raised towards our funds, so a big thank you to everyone who supported the evening.

As mentioned last month, there are still a couple of vacancies on the Management Committee for new Trustees and if you are interested in helping with the running of our village hall, either as a Trustee or as a Friend, please contact Philip on 01823 400609. In particular, we are looking for an events’ organiser to plan fundraisers throughout the year. If you are able to help in any way, please let Philip know.

Renewal forms for the 2023/2024 Victoria Rooms’ 100 Club have now been sent out to all past subscribers and over a third of people have already responded – many thanks. However, if you are new to the village, or feel you would like to take part, please contact Sue on 01823 400609 and she will send you an application form. Entry costs just £12 a year for 12 monthly draws which means there are 12 chances of winning the monthly prize of £50 and, with only 100 members, the odds for winning are much better than the National Lottery! The draw takes place at the monthly market and the winners for the April draw was Wendy Jones – well done Wendy!

The monthly market takes place on the first Saturday of the month, with a variety of stalls in the main hall and Victoria’s Café in the Reading Room selling delicious cakes and coffee. The market and café are open from 10am to 12 noon. While there will not be a market in May as the first Saturday of the month is the date of the Coronation of King Charles III, the 100 Club draw will still be made and the winner advised. The next monthly market is on Saturday 3 June. There may be tables available at this and future monthly markets and, if you are interested in booking one, please contact Sally on 01823 400320 or email barnyackland@hotmail.co.uk to check on dates.

Monday 1 May is Milverton Street Fair and the Victoria Rooms will be at the centre of events with the main hall home to over 20 stallholders, Victoria’s Café in the Reading Room selling delicious cakes and hot drinks and The Old Vic on the forecourt selling beer, cider, wine and soft drinks, where, thanks to Milverton Music Club, there will also be musicians providing great entertainment throughout the day. All profits from the Café and the bar go towards the upkeep of our village hall.

It will soon be suitable weather for outside gatherings and the Victoria Rooms’ gazebos are available for hire if you are hosting an outside event and think you may require some shade from the sun! If you are interested, please contact Philip on 01823 400609 to check availability.

Keep saving your postage stamps! So far, the sale of stamps has raised in excess of £200. Please contact Maggie on 01823 400142.

To hire the Victoria Rooms please contact Geoff on 01823 401365 or email geoff.elson@xini.com

Victoria Rooms January update

Our Mince Pies and Merriment evening was a sell-out! Despite it being a really cold evening outside, the atmosphere in the Victoria Rooms was warm and cosy, with lots of happy chatter and the spicy aroma of the hot, mulled wine.

Curtain up for mince pies and merriment
Curtain up for mince pies and merriment

The audience enjoyed a great mix of seasonal songs, readings and poems, and rounded off the evening with some carol singing, ably led by Tom Morrell on piano and Tony Batten on guitar – we didn’t quite raise the roof, but got pretty close! Thanks to all who performed or attended our fundraising event in the run up to Christmas.

A date for your diary – as you may remember, Somerset Opera were due to perform Iolanthe in the Victoria Rooms during March 2020 but, due to the pandemic, this, like everything else, had to be cancelled. We are delighted to say that they are back! This time, they will be performing The Gondoliers and will be at the Victoria Rooms on Saturday 25 March. Further details to follow next month, but if you would like to reserve your tickets before they go on general sale, please ring Sue on 01823 400609.

Our last monthly market before Christmas on Saturday 3 December saw a steady stream of customers. As in previous years, there will not be a market in January, so make sure you come along to the first market of 2023 on Saturday 4 February. As always, Victoria’s Café will be selling the usual delicious array of homemade cakes to accompany a cup of coffee and a chat. There may be tables available at future monthly markets and, if you are interested in booking one, please contact Sally on 01823 400320 or email barnyackland@hotmail.co.uk to check on dates. The monthly draw for our 100 Club winner will take place at the market. The winner of the December draw was Molly Burton – well done Molly.

Following our pleas over the last few months for volunteers to become Trustees of the Victoria Rooms, we are very pleased to welcome Helen Burton onto the committee. Helen has only recently moved to the village but comes with a wealth of experience in managing and running village halls and will be a great asset to the Victoria Rooms.

The Victoria Rooms’ AGM will be held on Tuesday 24 January commencing at 7pm, and all are welcome to attend. Do please come along and hear what plans there are for the future of our village hall and maybe even sign up to become a Friend of the Victoria Rooms.

Please continue to save your postage stamps from your Christmas cards (and indeed any post throughout the year) and donate these to the Victoria Rooms. They can be left in the pouch in the Reading Room if the hall is open or placed in an envelope and put in the postbox on the wall outside the hall. This is not just a Christmas initiative and stamps are welcome all year round – it is a great way of raising money from something we would normally throw away!
